Crime Solvers is a community program geared toward public involvement in the fight against crime. It offers cash rewards up to $1000 and anonymity to citizens who provide information to Crime Solvers.
Most of the information received by Crime Solvers is via the telephone. An easy to remember number, (434) 645-7111, was set up for Crime Solvers. This number is manned by the Nottoway Sheriff's Department on a 24 hour a day basis.
Each week an unsolved crime is selected as the crime of the week. The facts are broadcast on radio and printed in various newspapers.
When a call is received by Crime Solvers, a fact sheet is filled out. The date, time and a brief summary of the caller's information is recorded. The caller is then assigned a code number which is used in subsequent calls to Crime Solvers and when any reward is paid to the caller. All information is kept strictly confidential as callers remain anonymous, with no pressure to reveal their identity.
If a caller's information results in the arrest of an offender, the apprehension of a wanted person, recovery of stolen property or confiscation of illegal drugs, arrangements are made so that the caller can receive the reward in cash and perserve their anonymity.
A Crime Solvers Board of Directors, composed of citizens from all areas of the community, oversee the operation of the program and approves the rewards to be paid. The Board of Directors does not know who provided the information - only the facts of the case and the caller's Crime Solvers number. The determination of these rewards is based on the severity of the crime and other information presented by the policy coordinators.
Crime Solvers is a non-profit organization and is funded entirely through public donations. Contributions are tax deductible. Citizens with information about any crime are requested to call Crime Solvers at (434) 645-7111. The caller is assured anonymity by using this method.
